Today, I\u2019m honored to talk with my own Grandmother, Ruth Scheer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Grandma, how did you begin your writing career?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/URYgEZDsqLw\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>When I was about 13 years old, I wrote a poem about my little brother. I penned a couple of verses, which really appealed to my musical sense\u2014all those lovely rhymes at the end of the lines. I decided I wanted to write and describe lovely things. As a writer, I hope to inspire people to do beautiful things that stem from the soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rescotcreative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5627-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rescotcreative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5627-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.rescotcreative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5627.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption>Harold and Ruth Scheer<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You\u2019ve published several wonderful children\u2019s books. Tell us about your favorites.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My husband and I decided to start Scheer Delight Publishing with Mennonite press. All the books I\u2019ve published are exactly as he and I envisioned them. I\u2019ve had several fabulous illustrators, including my college friend Faye Grable. She illustrated my zoo trilogy: <em>Hippopotamus My Friend<\/em>, <em>Giraffe at the Zoo<\/em>, and <em>Elephant\u2019s Trunk<\/em>. I think they\u2019re darling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"254\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rescotcreative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5578-rotated-e1593751674638-254x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rescotcreative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5578-rotated-e1593751674638-254x300.jpg 254w, https:\/\/www.rescotcreative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5578-rotated-e1593751674638.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/><figcaption>Zoo Trilogy<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, we turned to my holiday storybook trilogy. The first book, <em>The Mouse and the Angel<\/em>, is a Christmas story in which the mouse represents the least of these, and the angel represents the most wonderful creation. I work them into the story of Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus on the night that he was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wrote another story, <em>Tanya\u2019s Easter Bunny<\/em>, in honor of my youngest daughter who was four at the time, who was worried that the Easter Bunny wouldn\u2019t find us at our holiday cabin. I wanted to reassure her he wouldn\u2019t have any trouble!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last story in the series, <em>The Halloween Ghost<\/em>, was illustrated by Tanya\u2019s own daughter Heather Deiter, a very talented artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rescotcreative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5586-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rescotcreative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5586-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rescotcreative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5586-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.rescotcreative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5586-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.rescotcreative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5586-rotated.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption>Holiday Storybook Trilogy<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Possibly the crowning story of my career, the one of which I\u2019m most proud, is <em>The Golden Dream<\/em>. I wrote this poem when I was twenty as the antithesis to Edgar Allan Poe\u2018s work <em>The Raven<\/em>. My story is the exact length with the same rhyme scheme and verse structure. However, where <em>The Raven<\/em> ends with \u201chopelessness,\u201d I end with \u201chopefulness.\u201d My illustrator Faye Grable drew the most beautiful pictures to accompany it. The story is about a little blind girl who represents humanity, visited by an old bird sitting on the lamp post who represents God, and a breeze that represents Mother Nature. It\u2019s an ethereal, lovely story of hope. Although the little girl never regains her sight, she seeks the truth when the golden bird flies to her bedside and drops a golden feather into her hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rescotcreative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5571-e1594186438296-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rescotcreative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5571-e1594186438296-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.rescotcreative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5571-e1594186438296-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ruth Scheer graduated with honors from Wichita State University in 1948 with a major in English and minors in both music and French.
